The Music of the Night

Once again I find myself coming off of a Bible study high--the body parts of God. I haven't stumbled onto a new study yet. However, on the way to school the other day, I was listening to the Phantom of the Opera. One of my favorite songs in this musical is The Music of the Night. The Phantom has just enticed Christine into the dark depths of the opera house. He then sings these words:

"Nighttime sharpens, heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imaginationSilently the senses abandon their defences
Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendour
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your face away from cold, unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Close you eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before
Softly, deftly, music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you
Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness which you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night
Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world
Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to go
Only then can you belong to me
Floating, falling, sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me, savour each sensation
Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in
To the harmony which dreams alone can write
The power of the music of the night
You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night"

Does anyone else think this is a "beautiful" picture of temptation and sin?

Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Lyrics: Charles Hart; additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe
Show: "The phantom of the opera" (1986)

Comments:
I was thinking that the entire time I was reading it.

So, tell me why this is one of your favorite songs? -Emily

The tune is like a lullaby. And Michael Crawford, the Phantom from the original London cast, has an excellent voice. Plus, a lot of the music in Phantom of the Opera is tense or chaotic. This one is easy to listen too. Plus, the lyrics are fascinating!
