Redeemer

Returning back to Job's comments, I will now look into the word Redeemer. The word redeemer in Job 19:25 is the Hebrew word goel (According to the Zondervan NIV Bible Commentary). The commentary says that the word has both a criminal and a civil aspect. I will look at the civil side during this post.

The civil aspect of the word goel refers to a kinsman-reedemer. In the Book of Ruth, Boaz becomes Ruth's kinsman-reedemer by buying the land from Naomi and from Ruth the Moabitess. "The women said to Naomi, 'Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he [directly Obed, son of Boaz and Ruth, and indirectly King David, great-grandson of Boaz and Ruth] become famous throughout Israel!" (Ruth 4:14 NIV)

Jesus ultimately fulfilled the position of The Kinsman-Redeemer. "You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." (1 Corinthians 6:20) "For you know that is was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect." (1 Peter 1:18-19)

But why did Jesus have to pay a price? Why could he just not claim us? That is for tomorrow!
